Sales and business have motivated me, Tammy Waters, for as long as I can remember. From a very young age I remember getting excited when I had the opportunity to sell something, from Girl Scout cookies to the kits I carried door to door to peddle wares for various fund-raisers in school. From lemonade stands to car washes to generate income – I loved them all. I enjoyed the people and the process as much as I enjoyed setting and meeting financial goals. I was raised by hard-working parents who farmed, as well as owned and ran a farm implement business. They taught me to value hard work and to love business, and it stuck from my very first job after high school.
Right after I graduated from Bovina High School and got married, I got my first job at Security State Bank in Farwell, TX. Soon after, I became the bookkeeper for Agri-Sprayers, Inc., a fertilizer and crop dusting business, until my first child was born. I sold Tupperware part-time when my 3 children were small. During that time, I also taught dance aerobics, complete with leotards, tights and leg-warmers. It was the 80s, what can I say? Raising 3 kids kept me busy for two decades, with several turns as room mom, team mom, and even a part-time job at my sons’ small private school as Fundraising Chairwoman.
In 1986, half way through a college degree at ENMU, I bought a business rather than finishing my degree in business. My definition of applied science! For the next 26 years I owned and managed a Christian bookstore known as The Master’s Bookroom, then The Master’s Books & Gifts and finally The Master’s Parable Christian Store here in Clovis. I also had the opportunity to get involved in the Christian retail industry on a national level by serving on the Christian Bookseller’s Association Board of Directors. Later, my store qualified to become part of The Parable Group Franchise and I was elected to TPG’s Advisory Board as well.
As if the bookstore were not enough to keep me busy, in 2001 I opened and ran a travel agency for a few years. In 2003, I also partnered with some friends to open a coffee shop called Java Loft. We now have 2 locations thriving in Clovis.
In 2006, I got my real estate license. From 2006 until December 2012 I sold real estate part time as I continued to manage the bookstore with the help of my incredible staff. In the fall of 2012 it was time to close The Master’s. My staff and I planned and executed a huge going out of business celebration sale. We chose to not mourn the closing of a business, but to celebrate our 26 years in business. December 22, 2012 we closed the doors to The Master’s for the last time, and I went from part time to full time Realtor® and real estate investor.
I truly love the life I have here in Clovis. I enjoy spending time with my husband, Dr. Jack Waters, and I always look forward to seeing my 3 kids, 2 in-laws and 8 grand kids anytime we can. I love being Grammy Tammy! In addition to my job as Realtor, I am also a past president of the Clovis Rotary Club. I currently serve on the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce Executive Board of Directors, and I am board member of The Matt 25 Hope Center, a compassionate outreach center.
